In 2007, in the garage of their home, two brothers decided to operate a software development company with a rented table, cheap chairs, and a cooler. The dream was to make a billion dollar company. The efforts paid them and team of twenty was soon looking after the operations. The very first year of the company proved to be profitable and gradually from the garage they could afford a place that could be called an office. In 2009 again, a whirlpool threw them baffled as they lost around one crore of their hard earned money in stocks. They had no idea how were they going to deal with office expenses, salaries and other things. But one rule they had set for themselves served as the support system they needed – “Not to risk the base capital and use corporate money with sanctity.”
Now, they had an established business in hand and CarDekho, which was yet in very nascent stage. However, they had no idea of from where will they pay the salary of fifty employees working for them. After making calculations that they can recover their loss through CarDekho, they took it as a flagship project. This service for people who want to know about and buy cars was embraced by folk. Over 40 million people visited the website and turned even twice. This was when the brothers knew it could work.
They had their share of trials-and-errors with a gemstone business previously run by their father and also for an astrology portal. All three were launched in 2008 but they kept only the cars business going and put other two at rest. This idea came to their mind when they attended the AutoExpo in Delhi. They made CarDekho live in just two weeks, the basic notion being putting the data about cars on the portal so people could understand the features offered, compare the models and read reviews and feedback from clients. Since buying a car is a big decision for anyone, its not a bedsheet that you could change from time to time, so people do wish to know which car is most suitable for them. And a service that helps them know the features, the pros and cons, and everything else objectively was definitely more help than asking your uncle or friends for their opinion about a car they never purchased. This was one major reason CarDekho was successful and spread the services to about ten cities. On the same lines, in 2009, the two brothers came up with MobileDekho, ShopDekho, PriceDekho, BikeDekho, MobileDekho, and CollegeDekho. Never a single penny was spent on marketing, yet CarDekho was getting popular.
Funding of fifteen million American Dollars was received by CarDekho in November 2013 from Sequoia Capital. Also, they were getting paid for putting advertisements as their online presence was spectacular. In 2014, CarDekho acquired Gaddi.com, run by Ibibo. Next was Times Internet’s Zigwheels in 2015. Since then, Amit has never looked back. Today he meets investors from India and abroad and has big plans. For him, success comes when you innovate and bring diversity in business.
